LLOYD NICK
Oglethorpe University Museum of Art
“HENRI MATISSE: A CELEBRATION OF FRENCH POETS AND POETRY”
In 1984 Lloyd Nick was asked to begin and develop both the art department and museum at Oglethorpe. He initiated the art major and minor during his tenure and negotiated the dual degree program for Oglethorpe and the Atlanta College of Art. He has taught all the art history and studio courses at all levels, except for photography. As museum director, Mr. Nick has been responsible for originating and developing distinctive exhibitions of historical and cultural importance and relevancy. He initiated an international artist-in-residence program in which artists from abroad come to exhibit their work and also work in the museum so that visitors might have a personal contact with the artist. Mr. Nick is recognized for knowledgeable planning and his ability to create and mount unique major-level exhibitions with extremely modest finances by negotiating the challenges with collectors and business community leaders. He has established an extensive record as an art professor and as a museum director, having been curator of more than sixty original international exhibitions and having published or written and designed eighteen exhibition catalogs.
Mr. Nick received his fine arts training and degrees from Hunter College of the City University of New York and the University of Pennsylvania. His first fulltime teaching position was at the American College of Monaco, where he also served as dean of students. He has lived in Europe a total of six years, including summer vacations while teaching.
